Hi. I am wanting to can my own food and some of the things I am interested in
canning, I understand you have to use a presure cooker to do it. Has anyone
used one before and can you give advice on how to use it as a totle blind
person? Thanks.
Hello Nicky.
You don't need a cooler, because people didn't have them before and did just fine.
But here's a great model I think.
For people that have never used them, this one is no fuss and does much for you.
I'd buy the pro model. It is only a few dollars more.
You can pay in 3 payments, or all at once.
Tell me what you think?

I meant cooker.
Now, you'd need to read up on canning.
Buying fresh produce is good to start.
I guess it depends on what you're after. I've thought about doing this myself, but haven't started yet.
My mother and gran did it, and the foods were wonderful, but it takes some time, storage, and I think at first it is more expensive then just going to your local market and choosing healthy choices.
Soups and such would be what I'd keep, but veggies because we can get most anything any time of year, I'd buy fresh.
If you're going to can, you should shop at farmer's markets and that kind of
thing. Don't go to a grocery store because you're not going to actually save any
money. You should also base your choices of what to can around what is
seasonal in your area. For example, where I live, I can get peaches year round.
Up in Michigan, I couldn't, so I'd can some to have in the winter time. Gave me
a bit of a taste of summer when I got sick of snow. So do some research on that
kind of thing first. But no, you don't need a pressure cooker. You just need a
really big pot. You can even buy a canning kit with jars and a jar rack and the
really big pot all included.
Some of the things I want to can does require a preasure cooker to prevent
botchulism. sorry for spelling. Greenbeans for an example. I am wanting to
make jelly and such too but you can boil can them. I am going to grow my own
garden and already know that I am not going to eat everything I grow so want
to can some of it.
Here, going to the farmers market cost a lot more than the grocery store. I was
doing that but stopped because it cost so much. A cucumber cost nearly $3 per
cucumber. Getting grass fed meat is costly too. I don't get soups from the store
because I don't like buying canned soups from them. I want to make my own
chicken broth and would like to can it instead of freezing everything. have a 5
cubic deep freezer and a good size storage room and pantric to store everything
in. I am wanting to do so much and don't want to be held back just because of a
lack of
I will do more resurtch and hope you guys can help me think and plan more.
Maybe I am just going a bit nutts. I have been baking my own bread wich has
been great and want to do stuff I have not had a lot of opertunity to do until
now.

You can get perfectly fine produce from the supermarket.
Just look for it. I don't say that to be funny.
I am a serious health nut, and was worse at one time.
I did the farmers markets, health food stores, and still will sometimes, but I learned if you have someone show you the cheaper variety of produce in the market, this will also be the less changed.
No waxing on the fruit. No fancy labels. It will be dirty. The wash it some, but it isn't as clean is the other that was washed before it even came to the store.
Buy dry goods that are just brown rice, beans, brown sugar.
You can buy soups that are not in cans, these are in cartons and need to be kept cool, or they'll spoil. They don't cost anymore.
It is absolutely great to can your own stuff too, but it doesn't have to be as expensive.
I sometimes thing people setup a farmers market, and charge more, because they can when in fact the stuff isn't farmer fresh at all.
So when you go to a farmers market, make sure it is actually a farmers market, and not a marketing tool. Smile.
The pressure cooker is nice, but again, not 100% necessary. People were canning before we had such nice devices and they didn't get sick.
Look for a store in your city that sales things in bins.
You want peanut butter, you buy your peanuts and you put them in the grinder in the store.
These are dying out, but they are lovely places to shop, and cheap too.
It takes more doing, because you've got to bring your containers, bags and such, but it is rewarding.
